The Poetry of Kenya

October 15, 2013 Derek Harrison

My recent experience in Kenya was incredible. Not only did I collaborate with Kenyan educators, I was teamed with teachers from across Alberta.

The most memorable part for me was working as a team at Free the Children’s Kisaruni Secondary School. We spent afternoons working in the hot sun constructing footpaths. It was teamwork at its finest; we were contributing to the community. Daily, we reflected on our experiences and learned more about each other.

I remember in particular one experience at the school when an Alberta colleague and I sat with six students. We spent time learning about the students’ daily life at the school and their hobbies. One student reported that her favourite subject was poetry. She recited aloud a poem she had written. My colleague and I were silent as she spoke, were overwhelmed by her confidence and maturity and the poem’s eloquence.

Derek Harrison is in his sixth year of teaching. He currently teaches Grade 4 at Elmer Gish School, in St. Albert..
